I had the opportunity to watch over 100 Black Buzzards washing and drying their
wings yesterday. They congregated in pools of water in a hay field created by
recent heavy rains within the city limits of Petersburg Tennessee. Some were
washing in much the same way a smaller bird would wash while others were
sitiing, wings spread, to dry. All this was taking place a mere twenty to
thirty yards from HWY 130 in Petersburg. The numbers built and declined
throughout the day as birds came and went. I haven't checked today to see if
they have returned.
