This morning before work I made a quick trip just to see what had changed
after all the rain (any excuse would have done). At TVA Lake the injured Snowy
Egret still is around, with a lot of luck it may made in through the winter.
The
was quite a collection of Bonaparte's, Ring-billed and a single Herring Gull
and the Greater and Lesser Scaup flock has doubled in size since my last trip.
The is a constant change over but the was nothing of special interest that I
could find in the limited time I had.
At the pits, there are still 15 Sanderling (with a little luck they might
make a Christmas Count), Dunlin, Western Sandpipers and a couple of thousand
Least. While I was there I witnessed a male Kestrel actually hunting the
shorebirds, making attempt after attempt to catch a breakfast. Kestrels
generally don't
do much in the way of shorebird hunting but I have seen them take a Least on
occasion.
I kept looking out all day at the beautiful weather and finally called Joe
Guinn to see if he could make a quick trip up to the Hatchie Refuge to see if
the Vermilion was still around. I located the bird without much trouble and we
spent a lot of time trying to figure our its routine. On a couple of times the
bird perched just 20-30 feet away but always with the sun at its back. I got a
few shots and decided to put up a web page showing the 3 Vermilion
Flycatchers that have visited our fair state this year.
