Marcia,

A friend of mine offered to share the following two stories concerning
hawks and cats:

At one time, I had a smallish black cat that was apparently grabbed,
then dropped in the creek by a red-shouldered hawk.  I heard the cat
scream bloody murder, the horse ran to see what was going on, the hawk
flew up and away from the scene of the crime.  Shortly after, a very
happy to be alive cat came home, soaking wet, covered with cat poop, and

with a large chunk of fur tufted out on both sides of his back.

The other incident involved a 'sail cat' being shared in the middle of
the highway near a fairly busy intersection.  Three crows, and to my
total astonishment, a red-shouldered hawk, were feeding shoulder to
shoulder on cat carrion.

I personally have seen a red-shouldered hawk carry off a squirrel, so a
small cat does not seem beyond its reach (so to speak).  On the other
hand, Cooper's Hawks are a little bit smaller than Red-shouldered Hawks
generally, and that would seem a bit more of a stretch (pun intended).
But an attempted attack on a cat by a Cooper's (successful or not), does
not seem beyond imagination.
