Saturday Nov 30 marked the appearance of my first Purple finches, a female and 
two males. A friend who lives closer to Oliver Springs, Don Domres (a keen 
birdwatcher whom I have entreated many times to join TN Bird), says that I have 
so few Purple finches because all of the rest of them are emptying his feeders 
(two winters ago he had as many as 30 a day). The same day, I saw the first 
Coots on the lake at the Gravel Pit in downtown Kingston, and the first small 
knot of Ringneck ducks in the little pond across the highway from the old K-25 
site. Since the big ice storm, Herring gulls have begun joining the Coots, and 
more Ringneck ducks appear each day.
