[TN-Bird] Two exciting finds

A new member has two great records (well, one definite) to note. My fiance,
Kay Norris and I were watching my feeders at home 11/21/02 when all the birds
scattered at once in panic. A raptor settled on a low branch for about
thirty seconds and then flew. It was gray backed, white fronted, about 20
inches high and sat unusually upright. Kay has seen Goshawk in the area of
Cainsville Rd, Lebanon before, and it seems likely that this was what we saw.
This back yard has a bird list, two years old, of 95 species, so it is a good
hunting ground among woodland and steep hill slopes.
On 11/29/02 we accompanied the Turrentines to Wheeler, AL. A wonderful array
of raptors was present, as were c. 1,000 snow geese, many sandhill cranes,
and a wide variety of duck. The significant sighting was a sub-adult golden
eagle, viewed for many minutes by all four observers. It was quite
distinctive, with the light brown marks on the upper wing, golden mane, and
white marks on the upper tail in front of the black edge. It was mobbed by
red tailed hawks, which provided a relative scale if one was really needed!
It was seen from the observation house by the naturalists building. Happy
Birding
