[TN-Bird] Birdy morning!!!!! Possible "rarie"

Good Morning,
There is lots of activity here in the Charlotte Park section of West
Nashville today. First, among my house finches, I saw a smaller bird with
some pink
on it. By the time I turned to look at it better, it flew into the grape
vines and disappeared below the deck. From what I saw, it looked as if it
MIGHT be a redpoll like we saw in Hohenwald last winter. I put out lots of
feed, so hope it comes back. You West Nashville folks watch your feeders just
in
case he didn't like mine. He's 5" long to a house finch's 5 1/4" which is
a pretty good gap with birds that small. He was with house finches which is
how I noticed the size differential which WAS quite definitive, and I am
pretty sure that I saw his red poll!
A flock of about 200 grackles arrived in my trees, and several came to feed.
All of a sudden, ALL the grackles, my blue jays, cardinals,
white-throateds, juncos, house finches, house sparrows, mourning doves,
chickadees and
titmice fled. I looked up just in time to see a daylight-flying great horned
owl
land in my hackberry tree. I don't know what has it out at a little past
8:00 A.M., but he was sure here. He left shortly and flew toward the river.
Slowly, the small birds came out from their hiding spots among the grape
leaves and under the chairs on the deck. Shortly afterwards, my male downy
woodpecker landed on the hummingbird feeder and started sucking up the sugar
water. He then flew over to the thistle feeder and helped himself. He flew
to
the deck floor to feed on seed, but he flew away when a squirrel intimidated
him. A Carolina wren then lit on the hummingbird feeder briefly followed by a
trip to eat from the thistle feeder. Another was searching for food among
the grape leaves that have fallen on the deck. Of course, a couple of
mockingbirds are lapping up the peanut butter on the deck rail and drinking
lots of
water.
A neighbor called me late yesterday afternoon about a bird in one of her
trees. From the description, it sounds like a red-breasted nuthatch. I sent
her the Cornell link and asked her to look him up. In past winters, I have
had
them in my pines here three times, but they did not stay.
Have a good birdy day!
