[TN-Bird] road-killed northern saw-whet owl in dekalb co.

Yesterday I found a banded, road-killed Northern Saw-whet Owl in DeKalb
County. I submitted the band number to the Bird Banding Lab via the
BBL's online band reporting site. The owl I found yesterday had been
banded in Wisconsin Oct. 20, 2004. I plan to donate the specimen, which
is in pretty good condition (photo at my website), to the Obed Wild and
Scenic River, a National Park Service unit in Wartburg, if they wish to
mount it for display; otherwise it will go to a bird collection at a
univ. here in TN.
Looks like the coming winter might be a good one for saw-whets in
Tennessee. I'd recommend adding a NSWO tape to the collection of tapes
you use for night work during CBCs or doing some work to improve your
whistled imitation of this owl's "toot" call; it's pretty easy to
imitate. It will be interesting to see if more than the usual (very
small) number of saw-whets gets reported on this year's CBCs and if the
reports come from areas other than the far eastern end of the state.
