TVA Lake - Ensley Bottoms
Mississippi River, Shelby Co. TN
The river had little to show this weekend as it is just starting to turn
down after a near 20 foot rise. There was a Horned Grebe in the slack water out
from Dacus Bar and 83 American White Pelicans slowly tooling down the river.
Almost the first bird I put the scope on in the scaup flotilla at TVA Lake
was an adult female Black Scoter, sleeping as usual. I'll post some photos as
soon as I can showing why they can easily be overlooked as other species. This
is turning out to be a scoter year, maybe other species will hurry down.
This coming few weeks will be the best time to look for Snow Buntings as they
appear around Thanksgiving with regularity.
The Red-tail show continues at Ensley with the gorgeous adult rufous morph
adult having taken up a territory with favored perch and calling out its
possession frequently. The immature rufous was not seen but I had little time
to
spare. The immature Krider's was still present but not the adult. There were
14 Red-tails in view at one time along with 3 Kestrels playing tag and male
and immature Harriers. Least, Killdeer and Greater Yellowlegs (6) were seen
along with 9 camo Wilson's Snipe.
Seventeen species of waterfowl seen from the river to Robco Lake.
Good Birding !!!
