Tunica Co. MS
I had a couple in from Vancouver, looking for a few of our wintering
species, so we took a morning run through Tunica Co, with a brisk cold wind
blowing.
It was my first trip into the area since the ducks and geese started moving
in numbers. We had success with Western Meadowlarks, Rusty Blackbirds,
Short-eared Owl, Vesper Sparrows and Red-tailed Hawks in good numbers (50+)
with
Rufous, Dark morph and Krider's plus Kestrel, Red-shouldered, Cooper's, a lot
of Harrier's, a male Merlin and a Bald Eagle. Lapland Longspurs were scattered
but in very small numbers.
Four species of geese with Snows in huge flocks moving all morning. There
was an impressive number of ducks of 12 species with very little attention paid
to scanning through them all. So the winter birding is getting up to snuff in
Tunica just 20 miles below Memphis.
Good Birding !!!
