Hello all,
I read in the paper today that the Cumberland Gap
National Historic Park is the process of developing a
management plan. They are holding several meetings in
late November at the headquarters. Also you can
submit written comments until January 15. Information
is available at:
http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectId=13830
They have designated three zones in the park: nature
(which would be undeveloped), cultural resources
(historic areas) and developed zone (interpretation
areas, recreation, maintenance, etc). The three
alternatives to the management plan involve variations
to the extent of each area. Essentially the
management plan will determine how much of the park
will remain in wilderness and how much will be
developed for hiking, parking, camping, etc.
I encourage all of you submit comments to any
management plan for public lands such as this. We all
pay taxes and this provides us with an opportunity to
say how our tax money should be used. As birders and
nature lovers, this is an opportunity to make a
difference in habitat for, enjoyment of, and public
education of the animals we love to watch.
