KY Lake areas of Henry & Benton Counties (all notable birds being in Henry
Co.)
I spent about half the day yesterday, making a quick check of some of my
favorite locations, here are some of the highlights:
Pacific Loon- 1 out from Rocky Point about 15:00. I couldn't stay late
enough to see the loons form up to roost, but I only saw about 50 loons on
the day, with none on the TN River side of Pace Point. Once again, Port Rd
would probably have been a better afternoon location.
Surf Scoter- 1 distant female-type in with the only small raft of Lesser
Scaup I could find in the Paris Landing area.
15 sp. of waterfowl including 1st of season Redhead, Bufflehead, and Hooded
Mergansers. Diving duck numbers still quite low, though Ruddies have rafted
up in several locations. No geese other than Canada.
Gulls: Lesser Black-backed Gull, adult at Eagle Creek loafing on flats with
other gulls, including 7 Franklin's. Another group of 19 Franklin's were on
the flats at Britton Ford. Several Bonaparte's Gulls in, and Forster's Terns
still in several locations. No gulls at all are using either the island at
Paris Landing (which now has a duck blind on it) or the island at Pace
Point.
80 American White Pelicans on TN River side of Pace Point.
Shorebirds were represented only by Killdeer, Wilson's Snipe, Dunlin (17 at
Britton Ford), and Least Sandpipers.
The only lingering passerine migrants were House Wren and a single Indigo
Bunting. This was the 1st time this fall that I've spent much time with
sparrows and not had Lincoln's. Didn't try for LeConte's. No warblers other
than Yellow-rumped and Pine.
Good Birding!!
