Today, in rain and overcast, we are down to 27 species in the yard, but
still enjoyable brown creeper and pileated woodpecker among the usual list.
Missing the juncos, hawks, starlings. On October 31 I noted two very large
wing-span birds seen gliding high across the yard, and asked if it was too
early for
sandhill cranes. While this was early, I am now convinced these two must
have been early arrivals, there are no sensible alternatives to the wing span,
flight, neck and head extended position etc. We have seen them in spring
migrating overhead, and below our hill top from which view the colors were more

apparent than against a lowering gray sky for a few seconds. Would have been
nice to hear a confirming sighting from this area of course.
