[TN-Bird] Election Day Surprise Red-tail

(Sorry this post is a day late.)
My husband and i were just about to walk out the door early yesterday morning
to get in line at the voting precinct. But a glance up into the 40 ft, nearly
leafless hackberry tree that grows 20 feet from the door made me stop and gasp.
There perched a big, beautiful immature Red-tailed Hawk!! Wow. Right here in
downtown Nashville!
It was very calm - looking around and down at the feeder area, which was
QUITE empty of birds and bulked-up squirrels. It even did some preening and
rode the branch through a prolonged gust of wind. We hated to open the door,
but after it moved to a different branch and we could no longer see it very
well, we walked out to the car and were very surprised when it didn't fly away.
We haven't seen it since, but mmmmm, wouldn't that be a nice way to start each
day??
We've recently had one Junco eating beneath the feeder, and we've seen
White-throated Sparrows in the neighborhood, but not feeding at our seed. Last
Saturday morning we were visited by a FLOCK of 12 Cardinals!
Keep looking up.

Nashville, just off Music Square
