On Monday morning it was overcast with some wind when I arrived at
the ranger's house next to the dam to begin searching for the
MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER this morning at 7:20 am. It took about
20-25 minutes but eventually I spotted him in the little patch
of weeds next to the water in front of the ranger's house. I had
a second brief sighting near the dam about 25 minutes later.
Both times he was chipping softly and provided only brief looks.
I wandered the Lake Trail and found a WINTER WREN and 3 male
BUFFLEHEAD on the lake. Returning to the dam about 8:40 am the
skies were clearing but it was still a bit windy. I found Jan Shaw
and a birder from North Carolina searching for the warbler. Jan
finally saw the bird, but it went undercover before the fellow
from NC could find it. From recent reports the bird appears to
be wandering farther afield in its search for food.
I saw my first PURPLE FINCH of the season, a male, before leaving
for work about 9:20 am. Hope they refound the bird.
