Duck River Unit
Humphreys County

Today I walked the dike from the pumphouse down to the
Grassy Lake area, about a mile. This is on the Tn. river
side of the refuge. Looking eastward, toward the cormarant
roost, was an incredible number of big white birds. My scope
was full of American White Pelicans and Great Egrets. I'm
sure I was looking at least five hundred of these guys.

Later in the day, on the Duck River side, I had very good looks
at Bonapartes Gulls. Waterfowl totals were down. Seven No. Harriers
were seen and I lingered here until dark in hopes of seeing them
come to roost and perhaps seeing Short Eared Owls. Didn't happen,
but I was treated to a full moon rising and the hooting of a Great
Horned Owl.

Talk and walk softly, carry a big
scope.
