I went looking for the Lapland Longspur reported by Rick Knight. I didn't=20
find it, but in the pond next to Tri-State (Equipment?), I found a plover=20
amongst several Kildeer. I at first assumed it to be the Black-bellied Plov=
er that=20
Rick also reported, but patience paid off with good views of the following=20
when the bird flew (and came back, and flew again): Base of tail not contra=
sting=20
white, upper wing not boldly striped white, underwing gray without black=20
axillaries. I also heard its flight call and checked it against the Stokes=20=
Field=20
Guide to Bird Songs CD. It matched the shrill, two note, rising call of the=
=20
American Golden-Plover. The National Geographic Field Guide mnemonic=20
(ku-wheep) is a pretty good rendition of what I heard. The Golden-Plover le=
ft with the=20
Kildeers heading northwest shortly before a Northern Harrier flew over the=20
pond from the south.
