When Don Manning and I arrived to locate the Phalarope, a lot of flying
Franklin's Gulls in the distance got my attention. These birds were
working over the River, out from the main boat launch/point, which is
now closed to access. In between watching the Phalarope, and the
Franklin's, I eventually was able to count AT LEAST 70 hooded gulls on
the water, I can't say for sure that none were Laughing, but all of the
birds I saw in the air were Franklin's, and I feel the entire group was
Franklin's. This is by far more Franklin's than Don or I either had ever
seen before, period. The gulls had moved on by the time Nancy arrived,
with a group of 20 picking up and flying towards Paris Landing, all
Franklin's. The remainder were on the water, slowly working south the
last time we saw them

Don and I had been back and forth with the Phalarope ID before Nancy got
there, as we had good looks at the molting juvenile which still had
juvie tertials and a few juvenal coverts visible when it preened. Jeff
finally arrived to ease all of our minds by nailing the bird as a Red.
This was a lifer for both Don and Nancy, and my 2nd-ever (previous bird
being one of Jeff's birds at the Pits). I got some shots of the bird,
and I hope to post a couple tomorrow to my site.

Good birding!!
