[TN-Bird] Elizabethton Fall Count

Elizabethron Fall Bird Count:
The Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS held its annual fall count on 29 Sep 2007.
26 observers in 7 parties + 2 feeder watchers participated.
Area covered = Carter Co., & parts of adjacent Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, &
Washington Cos.
130 species were found, which is above the average of 124.4 species for the
previous
twenty years. The all-time high for this count is 137 species found in 1993.

highlights:
Great Egret: 118 - separate flocks of 75 & 43 (Both exceeded the previous
high number for the region.)
10 species of raptors, including a Merlin & 2 Peregrines.
Sora: 1
Baird's Sandpiper: 1 (First local record in 10 years.) Only 3 other
non-Killdeer shorebird species.
N. Saw-whet Owl: 1
Chimney Swift: 1270 (Third highest total on fall counts.)
Red-headed Woodpecker: 1
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker: 7
Olive-sided Flycatcher: 1
5 vireo species, including 1 Philadelphia (scarce in NE Tenn.)
Com. Raven: 13 (Found by 5 parties.)
Red-breasted Nuthatch: 20 , including several found at low elevation sites.
Am. Pipit: 1
23 warbler species:
Tennessee: 60
Orange-cr.: 1
Nashville: 1
N. Parula: 2
Chestnut-sd.: 2
Magnolia: 9
Cape May: 10
Black-thr. Blue: 10
Yellow-rumped: 19
Black-thr. Green: 6
Blackburnian: 6
Yellow-throated: 1
Pine: 4
Palm: 64
Bay-breasted: 8
Black & white: 1
Am. Redstart: 2
Ovenbird: 8
N. Waterthrush: 1
Com. Yellowthroat: 4
Hooded: 5
Wilson's: 1
Canada: 1
a few migrant sparrows, including 3 Lincoln's & single Swamp & White-thr.
Rose-br. Grosbeak: 173
Bobolink: 2
Pine Siskin: 15
