Preliminary Banding Summary for 2007 Whigg Meadow Bird Banding Station, Monroe
Co., Cherokee National Forest, TN
Sept 1 - 30
Nets were opened on all but 1 day in September (closed due to rain one day) .
This is the longest period of banding at this location since the station was
established 10 years ago. This increase in net hours combined with an
exceptional migration resulted in a total of 2540 individuals of 50 species
captured. Captures by net hours are estimated to be the 2nd highest in station
history. 3 species never captured here were recorded in the 07 season (YBCU,
RBNU, and YRWA). Daily captures ranged from 20 to 232 individuals per day.
Some species observed on meadow but not captured included Merlin (up to 2 which
were present from around the middle of the month until the end. Also, American
Woodcock, Water Pipits (2), Peregrine Falcon, Osprey and Common Raven (1-2 seen
almost daily).
Thanks to the many volunteers who contributed 980 volunter hours, to Cherokee
National Forest who contributed various forms fo support and to TOS which award
us the Katherine A. Goodpasture Grant for purchase of nets and other banding
supplies.
