Oct. 11, Rankin Bottoms and Dutch Bottoms, Cocke Co.TN
I finally got a chance to check out Rankin Bottoms. Arriving in mist and
drizzle, driving the approach down the causeway with the coal tipple rising
above the willows like a medieval tower, snags in the moat-like bays festooned
with cormorants, great egrets and herons, I'll have to say on first impression
I was enchanted!
Rain kept me from doing a thorough survey, but birds of interest included my
first-of-season White -crowned Sparrow, a first year bird that sang
occasionally at bright intervals. Other sparrows present were White-throated,
Song
and Swamp.
Western-type Palm Warblers were seen along the road in good numbers with one
Philadelphia Vireo.
No shorebirds seen other than Killdeer. There were Green-wing Teal mixed in
with Mallards.
A large flock of Tree Swallows, aprox. 200, were seen and heard over the
lake at Dutch Bottoms along Hwy. 25E.
