[TN-Bird] White-throated sparrow plus a cardinal's injury

As I brought my breakfast to the dining table at 8 AM here in the Charlotte
Park area of West Nashville, a very active and hungry white-throated sparrow
appeared on my deck to feed. It's my first for fall. It sure seemed happy
to be back at Dee's Smorgabird! It was just flitting around everywhere to
select just the "right" seed to eat.
Just now, tragedy struck (literally) when one of my gorgeous male cardinals
slammed head-on into the glass of my French door. In tears, I rushed out and
picked him up off the deck and cradled him on his back in my hand. His
little neck was limp, and I thought it was broken. He began to squirm and
make
some sort of "whack, whack" guttural sounds reminiscent of a great blue heron,
only softer shorter and less croaky. Since he is showing signs of life and
is now holding his head up, I put him on a chair where he has been sitting
for about ten minutes. He just now turned around and made a threatening move
toward a house sparrow that lit on "his" chair. He's sitting up better, and
has turned to face the food. He's moving his head right and left; he seems
quite alert; he just SHOOK his head and is sitting facing me. He is able to
raise and lower his crest. He just turned another half circle to face east.
(Mecca?) I think he just MIGHT make it.
Oh WOW, another male cardinal just came to join him, and they quickly flew
away together! Both are in a tree out back just calling up a storm.
Celebration????? Other than when I had him on his back in my hand and his
flight,
which was very sudden, all is recorded on my digital. Just before I put him
on
the chair, I turned him upright in my hand to make sure he was actually able
to hold his head up and took photos from that point on. I hope he is able to
eat soon and get some energy back.
What a morning!! Must get dressed and off to a meeting.
Happy birding,
Dee Thompson
