clear, cool
Returning from a weekend in the Chicago area where my best
bird was a lone BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, I wandered
around Radnor Lake this morning to Long Bridge and back to
the west parking lot. Bird activity was most extensive
along the water's edge and in the sunlight. I found
several nice mixed flocks with good variety and plenty of
activity. SWAINSON'S THRUSHes have declined in number from
last week, but there were still plenty of ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAKs. However, the most numerous bird of the morning
was YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, signaling to me that
warbler migration is approaching its end. In addition,
I saw no CHIMNEY SWIFTS, the first time I have missed
them in several weeks. I had 9 species of warblers and
4 species of vireos this morning.
Species of interest (and several comments) included:
Killdeer 1 calling and circling the lake
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 2
Northern Flicker 1
Eastern Wood-Pewee 2
Eastern Phoebe 2
House Wren 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 one displaying its ruby crown
Swainson's Thrush 3
Cedar Waxwing 8
Blue-headed Vireo 1
Yellow-throated Vireo 1
Philadelphia Vireo 4
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Tennessee Warbler 8+ many foraging down below eye level
Nashville Warbler 1
Northern Parula 1
Chestnut-sided Warbler 5
Magnolia Warbler 10
Yellow-rumped Warbler 30+
Black-throated Green Warbler 4
Bay-breasted Warbler 2
American Redstart 1 female
Scarlet Tanager 2
Rose-breasted Grosbeak 12+
White-throated Sparrow 1
