[TN-Bird] Update: Late Indigo Bunting nest
- From: Daniel Moss <dmoss5@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

The Indigo Bunting nest which I initially reported to the listserve on
September 6 successfully fledged young on September 25. There was 1 nestling in
the nest when I checked it on the afternoon of the 25th. I put a mirror up to
the nest to see if any other nestlings were hidden in the bottom and the lone
nestling fledged from the nest and landed several feet away. Apparently the
other nestlings fledged earlier that day.
I checked the Birds of North America account and the latest an Indigo Bunting
nest contained young was September 26th in Ontario (Peck and James 1987). So
this is a very late nest indeed. The nestlings were in the nest either 13 or 14
days, which is a bit longer than the 9-12 day average.

>On Wednesday, September 6, 2006 I flushed a bird off a nest in a small dogwood
>tree while riding an ATV through a field. I didn't have my binoculars with me
>and didn't get a good look as the bird flew off. The nest contained 4 white
>eggs so that quickly narrowed the list down. I went back yesterday (Sept 7)
>with my binocs and was able to confirm the ID as a female Indigo bunting on
>the nest.
>
>I do not have the late nest dates for INBU's in KY, but the Breeding Bird
>Atlas of TN (Nicholson) lists August 28th as the latest nest date with eggs.
>This is an extremely late nest for this species regardless of whether it's a
>breeding record or not.
>
>I'll continue to monitor the nest and will report the results later.
