Rankin area, Cocke county, 10/1, 5:30 to 7:30 PM
We launched our canoe at Leadvale and cruised into the small remaining
embayment at Rankin Bottoms then went under the trestle over to the north
end of the 10 Islands area on the west side of the Rankin peninsula; most of
the area is still under water. The great egret colony is now roosting in a
(Jefferson county) tree line just around the bend from the last stretch west
to the Walters Bridge.
Notable:
Canada goose (150)
Mallard (45)
Blue-winged teal (100+)
Northern shoveler (5)
Pied-bill grebe
Great blue heron (42)
Great egret (120+)
Black-crowned night-heron (5)
Peregrine falcon (imm.)
Killdeer (32)
Least sandpiper (10)
Ring-billed gull (4)
Rankin Bottoms, 10/2, 2:00 to 3:00 PM, by car, from the Gate Pond to the old
trestle abutment across from the Leadvale boat launch:
Wood duck (4)
Mallard (15)
Blue-winged teal (4)
Great blue heron (12)
Great egret (42)
Osprey
Merlin (2)
Killdeer (3)
Spotted sandpiper

Rankin Bottoms is greening over rapidly; Douglas Lake will be lowered
substantially through the week.
