At this time of the year the bird very well could be an immature with brown
hazing on the plumage. After the brown scalloping wears off the tips most of
the plumage appears brownish. Even a worn female usually has darker wings. The
best ID point would for an immature would be the slight thickening of the leg,
tapering down on the tarsus from the joint. This is noticeable if you look for
it even into late winter. If you are not use to looking at the confirmation
of the legs and familiar with adults, you might over look this in the field.
Slightly shorter wings also are a good point for immatures but you have to be
very familiar with adults on that point also.
Just thought someone might check these points if the bird stays.
