[TN-Bird] benefits of being Mr. Mom

HI folks,
As of this past Monday, I am home with our son Allan through the end
of the year. This means I'm rarely out in the field, which will be
hard to take. But it means I'm becoming more acquainted with our
yard, where we've put great effort into eradicating non-natives and
planting native species (many of which came from Meredith Clebsch's
Native Gardens, and I'll be at her open house this coming week
getting more!)
Today I was sitting on the front stoop feeding the little guy when I
noticed at least one PALM WARBLER. Then there was a MAGNOLIA
WARBLER. The latter is a yard bird for us. Both were hanging out in
a brush pile I've built up over the last 2 years. Birds and other
critters sure love brush piles. Neighbors kind of scratch their
heads, but that's ok. I like to leave people wondering. The Maggie
then went to play in our Hemlock Tree.
Speaking of Hemlocks, you should have an expert look at any you have
in your yard. THere is a nasty pest called Hemlock Wooly Adelgid
that is starting to kill off the hemlocks in this area. It devastated
areas in NY, PA, MD, VA and NJ. If you catch it early, you can save
your trees. Thus far ours is clean.
Charlie
