Hello,
Ever since my wild grapes started getting ripe several months ago, I have had
at least twelve mockingbirds in and out of the approximately 84 foot long
vine around my deck almost all the time. There may actually be more in that it
may not be the same twelve birds all the time. There are three yards near me
that provide nesting sites for mockers every year, so literally hundreds of
these birds have been reared nearby and brought to my "smorg-a-bird" for peanut
butter every year since 1991. No telling how many showed up to fight over the
bumper crop of the tiny wild grapes when they became ready to eat. Some of my
cardinals, sometimes thirty birds at a time, started eating the little grapes
while they were still green. It's been fun, but the grapes are just about
gone. I've had cardinals nest in a rose bush and in a holly tree this year, as
well as feeding many more from nests in all the neighboring yards. They were
coming in droves. A bumper crop in grapes brought a bumper crop of
cardinals. I still have babies flitting around the deck with their little
BLACK beaks
with no hint of an orange tint yet. All these birds and my two poodles make
up a pretty large family to look after.
