[tn-bird] Roseate Spoonbill/Virginia Rail at Kinser

On Thursday, Oct. 10, Reece Jamerson (Johnson City), H.P. Langridge
(Elizabethton) and Bryan Stevens (Hampton) went to Kinser Park in Greene County
to try for the Roseate Spoonbill.

We arrived at 6:45 with a heavy rain and immediately found six Great White
Egrets at a roost in a tree. No spoonbill.

At a marshy depression next to the golf course Bryan Stevens found a Virginia
Rail concealed in the limbs of a shrub about six feet tall. (How typical is a
rail in a shrub or tree?) Anyway, the rail flew from the shrub down into the
weedy area of the shoreline, ran a few steps and then flushed and flew into
thicker cover and wasn't seen again.

Also, in this same area, one Northern Waterthursh.

Langridge went to the extreme right and, with the light fading, located the
Roseate Spoonbill feeding in shallow water among 80plus Canada Geese. Jamerson
and Stevens caught up with him and also saw the bird.

We left the bird, still feeding, as the light failed and the drizzle of rain
continued, at about 7:20 p.m.

Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
