10-9-02 Cloudy/misty rain by 1:00 pm Temp- 60-70 today
I decided to bird some of the "rarely birded" regions of
Campbell/Claiborne Counties this morning and specifically wanted to
check an area near Tackett Creek in NW Claiborne County, Tn to look for
Common Raven in the location I had seen one on 4-30-02. I have not been
able to return to the area since then due to its remoteness and the time
it takes to get there.
I arrived at 11:30 am in the area, drug a chair out of the back of
the jeep and sat down to eat. At exactly 11:45am I heard and then saw
2 COMMON RAVENS flying along the top of a ridge in a Westerly direction
towards Campbell County line and the area known as Double Mt. / Horseshoe
Mt. The lat/long. location was:
36. 32.03 N
83.49.95 W
This is slightly West of the TN Valley Divide and Cumberland Mt. range
and can be reached by turning off of Hwy 90 N.of Clairfield, TN onto
Valley Creek Rd. and driving back into the active mining areas. (See TN
Gazateer /pg. 68 -bottom L.hand corner ) I am not sure of the exact
elevation though I believe it
to be apx. 2500-3,000 ft. on the ridge they were flying over. Though I
stayed in the area a couple more hours, they were not seen or heard again
today.
This is my 3rd sighting of Common Raven in this area of the
Cumberlands in the past year, though the first time I have seen 2
together.
I believe it is possible that the COMMON RAVEN may be expanding its
range from KY back into this section of the Cumberlands. The habitat is
suitable for the birds to nest consisting of numerous rock ledges. Of
course, these birds could be coming from Bell County, KY area (Pine Mt) ,
but I thought it significant these 2 were seen in the exact location as
one on 4-30-02 (Nell Moore/Ken Cutsinger-TWRA)
I also saw several Tennessee and Magnolia Warblers also as well as my
first fall RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET today.
