NTOS held its Fall Count Saturday, Oct. 5, and recorded 128 species. The
most unusual was a flock of 31 White Pelicans seen high overhead in a V
formation over Mary Zimmerman's house near Shelby Bottoms. Other birds of
interest included 2 early Hooded Mergansers, 1 late Least Flycatcher, 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, all the woodpeckers including Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, all the expected vireos, 23 warbler
species including 1 Connecticut, 2 Canadas and one late Louisiana
Waterthrush, large numbers of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks on a few routes, and 4
Lincoln's, 1 Swamp, 1 White-throated, and 1 Lark Sparrow. Only 3 shorebird
species were found, Killdeer, Pectoral Sandpiper, and Solitary Sandpiper.
It was a beautiful day to be out birding. Thank you to all who participated.
