Jimi and I took a short ride up Caryville Mt. (Royal Blue WMA)
Sat morn. to look for migrants. We only birded about a 1/2 mile section
of a coal mine "shelf" overlooking the valley.
Highlights were a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, my first in Royal Blue .
Warblers were scarce with Tennessee Warbler taking the high count at 20+
We only saw 1 Magnolia/ 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER/ 2 Palm Warblers; several
Common Yellowthroat Warblers, and a CANADA WARBLER was a good bird for
the Cumberlands.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were the most abundant, with several different
flocks of 10-12 feeding in the Locust Trees. Blue-Jays were also
numerous and moving overhead- 50+.were counted.
On Sunday, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were arriving in good numbers at Cove
Lake St. Park. Palm Warblers were around. American Coot numbers are
increasing with 13 being present. 4 Double-crested Comorants are still
hanging around. The ducks shouldn't be far behind.
3-5 Hummers are still coming to my feeders.
