Tn-birders,
Frank Bills, Dollyann Myers and myself went to Kingston Steam Plant (Roane
County) this morning at 8 to do some birding. We had one of our most enjoyable
days there ever, as we tallied over 60 species by 11:30 and found some goodies.
The best bird was a Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow. The location was...go past
the main lower pond (on your left as you go in, and the one where we always
have most of the shorebirds) and take the first road on the left. This is the
road that goes past the tall blue metal tank. Go to the north end, where it
meets the perimeter road. It was seen at the corner. We watched it in the scope
for about 4-5 minutes as it perched in the short scrub bushes there. This is
the exact same corner we had one about 4-5 years ago. There were also 2 Marsh
Wrens in the same scrub. We also had 9 species of waterfowl, not including Can.
Goose.
The following list is not all the birds we saw. I left out some of the common
species as Carolina Wren, etc.
Cormorant-7
Great Egret-2
Green Heron-1
Black-crowned Night-Heron-12
Green-winged Teal-10+
Am. Black Duck-1
N. Pintail-1
Blue-winged Teal-1
N. Shoveler-3
Gadwall-1
Am. Widgeon-2
Hooded Merganser-1
B. Vulture-50
Osprey-1
Red-sh. Hawk-2
Peregrine Falcon-1 Imm.
Lesser Yellowlegs-1
Spotted Sandpiper-2
N. Flicker-2
Barn Swallow-2
House Wren-1
Marsh Wren-5
Ruby-crowned Kinglet-1
Blue-headed Vireo-1
Yellow-rumped Warbler-1
Palm Warbler-50+
Indigo Bunting-3
Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow-1
Bobolink-20+
I took a picture of the Sharp-tailed Sparrow with a digital camera. At this
point (as I type this) I have not looked at it. If anybody wants a copy
attached to an email, let me know. I'll look at it later and determine if it's
worth anything.
Great Birding,
Ron Hoff
