This might have been the most exciting week of birding we have ever had in
the Chattanooga area!

Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were found by Libby Wolfe and Janice Chadwell on
Oct. 1 at the Standifer Gap Marsh. They were last seen about 6:30 PM EST
and were not relocated despit attempts by several birders on the following
days. The birds were being seen on both sides of the gravel road that
transects the marsh just before you enter the marsh.

These are probably only the fifth or sixth record for the state!!

Here are directions: from I-75 get off at the Shallowford road exit and
take a right (coming down from the north). Take a right at Lee highway at
the light. Take a left at the next light onto Standifer Gap road follow it
to the light at the intersection with Hickory Valley road and proceed
through the light staying on Standifer Gap. Look for a small church on
right (made out of trailer buildings) and take the right just before the
church. You will see themarsh on your left. Follow this road along the
marsh until it dead ends with the road that transects the marsh. Take a
left towards the marsh.

A SOOTY TERN was found by Dan Jacobson at 12:30 EST on September 28 above
Nickajack Dam in
Marion co. in the wake of the tropical storm It was seen off and on until
around 7:00 PM EST and was not relocated despite the efforts of several
birders on the 29th The tern was among several Common Terns flying among
the rockpilings and bouys. Eighty Common Terns were counted in the area as
well as an adult Laughing Gull on September 27 (John Henderson) and a couple
of Herring Gulls were also spotted. It is the third state record for Sooty
Tern and the first since 1934!!!!!!!

At the Standifer Gap Marsh on September 30 were a LEAST FLYCATCHER ( a very
rare Hamilton co. bird) one female Wilson's Warbler, one Nashville Warbler,
and a Philadelphia Vireo. (Kevin Calhoon)

The Soddy Mountian Hawkwatch continued its record breaking fall with 1161
Broad-winged Hawks on Sept. 28 and 402 on the 29th to bring the fall total
to a record breaking 5035! (Jimmy Wilkerson)

The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on October 10 at
7:00
PM at the Accension Luthern Church 720 South Germantown Road

Check the lakes, dams and rivers the next few days for possible storm driven
birds as Lili passes through!!
