Our son, Corey along with his 3-year-old daughter Madeline invited us to go 
with them on her first fishing trip on Nickajack Lake, Marion County. We put in 
at the Shellmound boat ramp on the West side of the lake, checked the milfoil 
strips around the Dam and up to the crossover to the Nickajack Cave enty and 
the cove area that includes the Cave. We? observed 30 species of birds from 
1:30 - 4:00 PM CDT. All the shorebirds were on the milfoil slick closest to the 
Dam on the west side of the lake. By the way, Madeline caught six fish (two 
Sunfish and four Bream).

Species highlights include:


Wood Duck - 16


Blue-winged Teal - 75


Northern Shoveler - 1


Pied-billed Grebe - 2


Osprey - 1


Ruddy Turnstone - 1


Sanderling - 2


Semipalmated Sandpiper - 4


Least Sandpiper - 1


Baird's Sandpiper - 2


Caspian Tern - 1


Forster's Tern - 5


Black Tern - 12


Fish Crow - 2


Cliff Swallow - 1


Eastern Kingbird - migrating group of 14
