Working downtown and seeing a storm coming across the river, I made a quick
detour to Ensley. Unfortunately the rain was a fizzle but there were different
birds present. A group of 17 Forster's Terns were resting on TVA Lake.?A couple
looked like they might have been Common but they never moved while I was there.
?
At the pits, the numbers were again down but I had one neat experience with
some Buff-breasted. I first located two birds both adults, they were laying
down taking it easy and well camouflaged. Suddenly one stood up and started
wing flashing, I've seen this a couple of times, when they stretch one wing
out, holding it straight up and exposing their neat underwing pattern. This is
used?as a territorial signal and displaying to females. What happened next was
unexpected as two more Buffies dropped almost straight down to join them. I
like watching birds do their thing and after they flew up to the road I was on;
I followed them taking photos as they snatched insects from the Pigweed.
?
The two birds that had joined the original pair were both immature birds. After
about 10 minutes, the adult (I assume a male) again looked up and?started wing
flashing again. Lo and behold in?a few minutes another pair of?Buffies dropped
in. This guy was flagging down high flying birds or at least that is what it
looked like in my book. This time I was able to get a photo of the bird in full
signal mode. I?had photographed another?Buff-breasted?wing flashing on Island
13 years ago. You just never know what these Wind Birds are going to show you.
It is a?continuing education out there.....................
