[TN-Bird] Whigg Meadow Banding Report
- From: "David F. Vogt" <dfv@xxxxxxxxxx>
- To: <tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2006 13:42:45 -0400
During the 1st 8 days of banding (Sept 2-9) at the Whigg Meadow Banding
Station in Cherokee National Forest, Monroe Co. TN, we have banded about
350 birds of 28 species. The last 2 days have been the most productive
days with 70 or more captures on both of these dates. We will be
banding at this site through the 24th (weather permitting) and visitors
are welcome. If you would like directions contact me before Sept 14 and
I will provide further information before returning to the banding
station. In addition to the following birds captured, we have had a
nice movement of migrating raptors including: Merlin, American Kestrel,
Osprey, Turkey Vulture, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk,
Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Cooper's
Hawk. Ravens seem to be more numerous this year and have been seen
daily. As usual, Tennessee Warbler are our most frequently netted
species. Thus far, Swainson's Thrushes have been much less common than
in past years with only a handful being netted. These birds may just be
a little slow in migrating this year?
Thanks to all my volunteers who help out with chores and make this
project possible.
