From my deck this morning, west Knox County, Tenn., four Eastern Towhees 
under the feeders.  Three immatures, one male adult.  I find the immatures 
fascinating, watching how they gradually morph into adult plumage.  One, a 
male near-adult, still has a brown head but black back, wings, tail and 
breast, bright rufous sides; he?s stunning.  Another young male is still 
mostly brown with black showing through in places, pale rufous at sides, 
streaked throat & breast.  The third I think is a female, mostly just brown, 
perhaps the youngest.  The adult was feeding her but would dart at the older 
imm. males, chasing them from his preferred feeding spot under the feeder.  
Female cardinal still feeding a juvenile.  And a dingy looking Song Sparrow 
with a short tail.  Saw one in the path at Turkey Creek Wetland (west Knox 
County) on Labor Day following the rains with hardly any tail at all.  The 
one today under the feeder had a full tail, just a really short one.
