Having just returned this past weekend from a 3 week trip to
Europe that included my astronomy meeting in the Czech Republic
and a stopover in England, I was eager to see what fall
migration in Tennessee would provide.
Too bad the NTOS Wednesday walks at Radnor Lake did not start
this morning. I met Jan Shaw at the West Parking lot, and we
slowly made our way up to the dam, where birding was so good
that we could not tear ourselves away for about an hour. It
was great to look DOWN from the dam bridge onto a large mixed
flock of warblers and other birds feeding in the trees and
bushes below the dam. We had a flyover COMMON NIGHTHAWK. A
flock of 3-4 BALTIMORE ORIOLES included an adult male wandered
in and out of view, always a wonderful treat. We added
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and both SUMMER and SCARLET TANAGERs,
RED and WHITE-EYED VIREOs and a probable SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
Between us we had 10 species of warblers, including BAY-BREASTED
and BLACKBURNIAN, but the "piece de resistance" was our last
bird. Jan found a male MOURNING WARBLER skulking along the
spillway bank nextto the Ranger's house and we got killer
looks at it for perhaps 8-10 minutes as it moved in and out
of the bushes and vines.
Eventually Jan and I went our separate ways. I had to put in
some time at work, and Jan continued birding along the lake
trail.

Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1

Eastern Wood-Pewee 4+
