Tuesday, 5 Sept 2006

Dutch Bottoms, Douglas Lake
Jefferson/Cocke Co. line at the US Hwy 25E bridge

Mallard, 200+
MOTTLED DUCK, 1 see previous post
Green-winged Teal, 2

Double-crested Cormorant, ~20
Great Blue Heron, ~5
Great Egret, 10+
CATTLE EGRET, 2

CASPIAN TERN, 3
COMMON TERN, 18
BLACK TERN, 11+ possibly as many as 30

The Caspian and Common Terns were initially on the point near
the Mottled Duck but took flight when the Black Terns came in.
As I drove on toward Rankin on US Hwy 25E, I saw many terns
near the lighthouse park which were probably partly the same
group but there looked to be many more Black Terns. Traffic
and time kept me from seeing them well.

Rankin Bottoms, Douglas Lake
Cocke Co.

Canada Goose, 400+ many coming in as sunset
Mallard, ~20
Blue-winged Teal, at least 1

WILD TURKEY, 13 in a field off of Rankin Hill Rd on the way

Great Blue Heron, ~20
Great Egret, 150+
Green Heron, ~5
Black-crowned Night-Heron, 30+ all ages
WOOD STORK, 1 imm, feeding close by in the pond to the west of the
coal tipple

BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 3, 1 was on the flats then 2 more flew over
and it joined them calling and flying off to the west
Semipalmated Plover, ~6
Killdeer, ~10, surprisingly low number

Greater Yellowlegs, 1 right by the car, spooked when I got the camera
Lesser Yellowlegs, at least 3
SANDERLING, 9
peeps, 200+, including Least and Semipalm but I didn't have time to
go through them thuroughly before dark
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, at least 3
Pectoral Sandpiper, 40+
STILT SANDPIPER, 3
Short-billed Dowitcher, at least 25
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1

no phalaropes

Had the Long-billed Dowitcher early and got good looks at build,
plumage and huge bill. Then the Short-billeds abliged and came
in. A great study side-by-side but kinda like Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs when you get them together... obviously different.

The water level has risen and all the exposed mud is covered in
cockleburs and grass. Lots of peeps, Pectorals and such running
through the greenery that couldn't be seen well. Didn't see
Buff-bellied SPs but suspect they may have been some in the
cockleburs. Needed more time... stupid work... oh wait, that
pays the bills.
