Happy Labor Day, Birders!

Just few minutes ago, a Mama & Daddy Cardinal brought TWO fresh, young
babies to "Dee's Smorgbird" here in the Charlotte Park area of West Nashville,
Davidson County. As I mentioned previously, seven cardinal couples built
nests
in my immediate vicinity. They all brought the babies from their early
nestings here to feed. All except ONE little lone baby cardinal were
COWbirds!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been able to account for about 14 baby cowbirds
rised by
Cardinal "parents." One pair of cardinals brought a baby cardinal here a
couple of weeks ago, and it is already feeding itself. Mama and Daddy are
still
cracking sunflower seeds for the ones they brought today who bills are still
quite pliable. Wonder if the cardinal parents realized the other babies were
not theirs but fed and nurtured them because they were in their nest? Looks
as if my cardinals went in for some later nesting after the cowbirds
dispersed.

Cheers & prayers,

Dee Thompson
Nashville, TN
