[TN-Bird] Drenched hummingbird

Hello Birders,

Earlier this morning a very drenched, drowsy, droopy and HUNGRY male
hummingbird arrived at my feeder in the Charlotte Park area of West Nashville,
Davidson county. He hunkered down on the feeder and sucked up sugar water off
and
on for a good ten minutes. Between sips, his head would wobble as if he was
drowsy, and he was almost laying on the feeder in a very droopy fashion.
Obviously, he was spent from his trip, and had either come through heavy rain
on the way or "taken a dip in the Cumberland River." He was a very wet little
bird. I had to leave for a moment, and when I came back to the window, he
was gone. Fearing that he may have fallen off the feeder, I checked
underneath the feeder and in the grape vines below. He wasn't there. A few
moments
later, he came back to feed some more. Since then, other than a couple of
times, he hasn't flown more than five feet from the feeder where he perches on
a
little sprig of grape vine. He is drying out and looking better.
Hopefully, he will feed and get some rest here today before he takes off for
another
segment of his migratory journey. He IS almost tail-less, so may have had
some problems maneuvering. I've had lots of hummers today, including a little
immature that just tried to find sugar in a red clothes pin that is on a
hanger just outside the door. It realized its mistake and headed for the
feeder
where it is now filling up.

I'll sure miss these little visitors when they leave, especially since they
only come HERE about two months of the year.

Cheers & prayers,

Dee Thompson
Nashville, TN
