TVA estimates that Douglas Lake will be at 995.1 feet by midnight Friday, 9/10.
That's higher than it's been all summer, and nearly 10 feet deeper than last
weekend. That means no mudflats, virtually no shorebird habitat, and barely
any place to set up a scope at Rankin Bottoms. Also, 9/11 is the opening of
teal/wood duck hunting season.
Lake level info : 1-800-238-2264, punch "1" (current) or "2" predicted, then
"07" for Douglas Lake.
Labor Day weekend at Rankin Bottoms, 15 shorebird species were recorded, along
with 7 heron species (including the cattle egrets seen by Don Holt, Leslie
Gibbens and I on Monday evening). My unoffical count of total birders was 18,
including Rack Cross, whom I can now add to my life list.
