Ensley Bottoms
Eagle Lake Refuge
Shelby Co. TN
A return to Ensley on Monday revealed very little movement and all the
species present on Sunday were feeding away. The Wilson's Phalarope still moves
around a lot and can be hard to find but the Baird's Sandpipers stayed
concentrated in one pool with a couple feeding as loners in two other
locations.
I checked for the Mottled Duck a few times in the morning but the bird did
not appear among the numerous Mallards. An Osprey hunted over McKellar and the
TVA Lake. A single Broad-winged Hawk passed over heading south and the immature
Cooper's raise the wind birds twice as it traded across the pits.
At Eagle Lake Refuge there were a couple of wet areas that a few shorebirds
used and pair of birds not seen at Ensley over the weekend. These areas of
marginal benefit to shorebirds produced a molting adult American Golden-Plover
and
an immature Long-billed Dowitcher. Just imagine what could be seen here if
the area was actually managed for shorebirds.
Also present were: a single Semipalmated Plover, many Killdeer, Black-necked
Stilts, 24 Lesser Yellowlegs, which tolerate the higher vegetation, 2 Solitary
Sandpipers, feeding on the only two small flats of mud were 3 Semipalmated
Sandpipers, 1 Western, 64 Least and 10 Stilt Sandpipers. Feeding in the dense
sesbania were 2 Great Blue Herons, 31 Great Egrets, 11 immature Snowy and 9
Little Blue immatures with 2 adults.
Good Birding!!!
