Hi Folks:
It's just about "hawk watching" time again at the old Mendota Fire Tower high
atop the Clinch Mountain, and I've already got a touch of the fever. I'm
looking for others with the same symptoms who are willing to seek a cure by
spending some time on duty. I plan to keep the tally as usual; and there will
probably be the same basic cadre of folks helping out such as Bob Quillen, Bob
Riggs, Larry McDaniel.

Specifically, I need folks who are willing to take a day or two and be
responsible for the count that particular day, weather permitting of course.
This
person would keep the tally and call or e-mail the results to me if I am not
there that day. I especially need help on weekends. This will prevent gaps in
the
data without putting a strain on the personal time of just a few individuals.

The BBC has a field trip to the site on September 25, with Larry McDaniel as
the host. So that day is covered.

Last year we began the count on September 9 and ran it until September 30. We
had a total of 3840 raptors (3749 Broad-winged Hawks). This year we want to
exceed 4,000!

I plan to start the count on September 9 or 10 depending on the weather. If
anyone goes up before then and has a tally, let me know. You just never know
what kind of day to expect. Last year we only saw five hawks on September 9,
but
had 227 hawks on September 12. And according to Hawk Mountain, PA reports,
they are on the way!

So come join the fun and fellowship. We need all the "eagle eyes" we can get.
The more the better! Thanks.
