Montgomery county, TN
Fort Campbell Military Reservation
A sedge wren nest containing at least 2 young chicks was found in dense
vegetation along a moist, grassy section of a field on Fort Campbell today. The
nest was a globular shaped ball of grasses with an entrance on the side
approximately 6 inches off the ground. It was hard to see in the bottom of the
nest, but fortunately I had a small flashlight and was able to see 2
feather-less chicks.
Sedge wrens are known to move south and initiate late season breeding during
migration (Birds of North America). Jim Giocomo and I had suspected these wrens
were breeding here over the last few years. While conducting grassland bird
research under Dr. Dave Buehler we had noticed a group of sedge wrens arriving
in late July and August. I know there are records of "dummy" nests reported by
A. Clebsch and others (see Robinson), but are there any documented active nests
in TN in recent years?
I will, of course, monitor the nest until completion and post the results.
Also, I will talk more about this Ft Campbell population of sedge wrens at the
Fall TOS meeting.
