Info on Piping Plover movement through West Tennessee, East Central Arkansas
and Western Mississippi in the Fall Season from the mid 1980s through year to
date.
Records in ARK - Kenny and LaDonna Nichols - 25 Dates from 1994 thru 2003 in
ARK
Most of these records were at Minnow Farms with some at Bald Knob NWR and on
the White River flood plain in White Co. Kenny and LaDonna have no spring
records at present.
Records in TN - Jeff R. Wilson - 20 Dates from 1986 thru 2002 in TN - most
records were on or along the Mississippi River with one bird seen on the
Tennessee River. I have only one Spring Record and that was at Ensley Bottoms
on May
7, 1995
Records in NW Mississippi - Marvin Davis, Gene and Shannon Knight. 6 Dates
1987 through 2002 There are 4 spring records for NW Mississippi, all from
Sardis
Lake, April 9 through May 4.
These birds may be more numerous to the west side of the area looking at
Kenny's numerous records in a short time span but the early and late birds
evidently pass along the Mississippi River. More birds probably follow the
Mississippi River south but the habitat is less accessible to observers. I've
always
said if you want to see a Piping Plover, go to the Mississippi sandbars between
July 15 and the 1st. of September and wait. It looks like the minnow farms in
ARK can be even better. From the mid-eighties through this year, 81 individual
birds were seen over the 84-day period from July 5 thru Sept 27.
I have recorded immature birds as early as Aug. 7. I have photographed one
banded adult in a group of 6 (high number) seen by Nancy Moore and myself on
Aug. 18, 2002 at Island 13 on the Mississippi River.
