Dev Joslin and I managed to see a couple nice groups of migrants this
morning despite the cool front not quite reaching us as early as I had
hoped. A drive through Old Hwy 63 in Royal Blue WMA, Campbell County
produced
9 species of Warblers-
TENNESSEE WARBLERS 15-25 easily, plus many more birds in this group that
was moving so fast it was hard to count and ID them all.
MAGNOLIA -5 Several BLACK TH. GREEN
CHESTNUT SIDED -6. *BLACKPOLL *Fall first
BLUE-WINGED 1 2 HOODED COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
A great close look at a Male WILSON'S WARBLER *First this fall
We also saw a Ruby Crowned Kinglet (first I've seen this fall)
There were lots of other birds to sort through along with the Warblers so
such as Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-Breasted Grosbeak and an Empidonax sp.
(The Least Flycatcher hoped for did not appear to day)
Eastern Pewee and Eastern Phoebe and several White-Eyed and
Yellowthroated Vireo were calling.
This afternoon I was treated to a "yard bird" in my bird bath/sprinkler
and a brilliant, fine specimen he was- A Northern Oriole. He was stunning
in the sunlight with the water making him shine.
