[tn-bird] Re: Archiving THE MIGRANT online

Although I am a current TOS officer, I was not one of the TOS leaders
copied on Wallace's email. Had I been, I would have responded that this
issue was raised (by me) at the spring meeting, and it is being
researched.

As I see it, there are essentially three aspects to this task. First,
we must have the storage space, database server space, and web coding
necessary for a searchable archive, in whatever searchable format it
ends up being (my current thinking, subject to change, is .pdf is
probably the easiest way to go). Next, we need to establish a process
for archiving all future issues (and those recent ones that still exist
in electronic format) on an "as-you-go" basis, which I believe should be
fairly easy once the technical process is in place. The tough part is
what to do with the older issues. The large majority of them do not, I
expect, exist in any electronic format, and I expect that it will be
fairly expensive (either in terms of time, dollars, or both, depending
on whether we do it "in house" or pay someone to do it professionally)
to have them all scanned, OCRed and proofread.

So, in short, this concept is on my radar screen, and I believe Chuck's
as well, and hopefully Chuck and/or I will have more to report at the
upcoming fall meeting.
