EARTH Complex and area
Memphis TOS held its first of the season scheduled field trip today, at the
EARTH Complex (aka Ensley or the "Pits"). Weather wasn't bad; not terribly
hot, sky clear to partly cloudy.
There were 8 observers including Virginia Reynolds, hike leader. We found
70 species from about 7 a.m. to noon. Before hitting the pits, we checked the
TVA Lake and rode to the river, past the gate (key was obtained) -- that road
was partly grown over with 5-foot high grass and vegetation, but we still made
it to the river.
Our party found 13 species of shorebirds, including 4 Sepalmated Plovers,
over 400 Killdeer, 70+ Black-necked Stilts, 1 Greater and 100+ Lesser
Yellowlegs, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, several Semipalmated and Western Sandpipers,
over 3000 Least Sandpipers and nearly 1000 Pectorals, and 8 Stilt Sandpipers.
We were able to locate 13 of the Buff-breasted and 5 of the Baird's Sandpipers
of the larger numbers of them that have been there for the last few days.
Also, we found a Pied-billed Grebe, a few cormorants; Great and Little Blue
and Green herons, Great Egrets, 20 Wood Ducks, a Turkey Vulture and a Wild
Turkey, 6 Least Terns, 8 Eurasian Collared-Doves, a Screech-Owl, and Baltimore
Oriole. Warblers were 2 Parulas, 2 Prothonotaries, and a Blackburnian.
