Highlanders,
I'll be birding in your area for a few days and need some help on birds for
my TN year list, which I might say is going quite well. I finally broke down
and chased my first rarity at Reelfoot last Wednesday and added the Bell's. I
may decide to chase a few more across the state, if I get close to the 300
figure for the Year and I'm sitting on 282 now. I'd like to pass my 1994, 300
number but that's a pretty good hill and luck plays a big part. Mike Todd is
nipping at my heels and between Chris, Jay, Mike and Mark, these kids are
running this old man to death trying to keep up on these Big Days.
I'll be birding the morning of September, Friday 13th, all day on the 14th
and 15th and half a day on the 16th. I'll range as far as I have to and will
probably have to get down to the Smoky Mt. park area at some point. I'll be
staying at Johnson City on the 11th and 12th and will float after I see what
info you have for me.
I know the timing is not quite right but I'll need to try anyway for the
following species: Ruff Grouse (I know-I Know but there has got to be some
places and times better than others) Most of my success with these has been
coming out of Cades Cove. I hope maybe an Eared Grebe might show up at
Holston but I'll have some chance down here for that one. Red Crossbill will
probably not be in yet but? Raven should be fairly reliable at Roan Mountain
but I'm open to other locations and timing. Black-capped Chickadee, I'll
probably have to go down to the park if not this time then I'll have to come
back. Finally, Saw-whet Owl, I've had them calling before in late September
in the park but I'm open to any suggestions if there are other options or
possibilities.
If you are going to be out birding, I'd enjoy the company but I'll be running
pretty hard and covering as much area as possible on such a short trip.
This old man coot needs some help. Please answer off line and I'll compile
any info and share with the group. Hope to see some of you at the program on
Friday night.
Good Birding!!!
